If you read my first post, you know I clocked close to 1,000 hours writing and revising essays for these applications. That number isn’t a flex; it’s a confession of how much time it takes to distill four years of your life into the 250-word, 500-word, and 650-word chunks that colleges demand.
The process of writing wasn’t just about crafting good sentences. It was about standing under a mental microscope and trying to explain why I did everything I did. It was the hardest, most necessary part of this whole college mess.
The Blank Page is Terrifying
The start of every essay felt like staring into an abyss. I’d be up late, screen glare burning my eyes, with a word count hovering over me like a guillotine. The prompts were often so vague: “Tell us about a time you showed leadership,” or “Reflect on an idea that challenges you.” The real challenge wasn’t finding an idea; it was resisting the urge to write a boring, obvious answer.
I had to write seven different autobiographies for seven different programs. It wasn’t just writing; it was surgical excision. I was cutting away everything that didn’t serve the specific narrative the school wanted to hear.

Finding My Core Narrative: The Three Pillars
Through all the writing, I realized my entire high school experience funneled into three main themes. No matter the prompt, one of these three always found its way in:
- Service & Clinical Compassion: This came from my clinical shadowing, my time at the vet clinic, and my medical service trip. It wasn’t just saying, “I want to be a doctor.” It was proving I understood the actual, messy, patient-focused work involved in healthcare.
- Media & Communication: This is where the podcast and the website development came in. I realized I don’t just lead; I use modern tools to advocate and organize. Whether it was scaling the podcast or using a website to lobby for public safety technology, media is my way of amplifying community engagement.
- Resilient Leadership: This thread ran from leading the wrestling team as captain to running the large festival. Leadership isn’t just ordering people around. It’s about being accountable, showing up when it’s hard, and mentoring younger teammates even when you’re exhausted from school.
Identifying these three pillars was the key to making the rest of the application process manageable. Once you know your core story, you can mold it to fit any essay question
The Unexpected Gift of Self-Reflection
The best outcome of the 1,000 hours? It forces you to figure out who you actually are.
Before the essays, I thought I was just a student with a good GPA and lots of activities. After, I saw myself as a systems-thinker who uses media for community action and wants to be a compassionate healthcare leader. That clarity is priceless.
It’s the most intense, free therapy session you’ll ever have. Use the essay writing process to find the connections between your ECs—don’t wait for the college to find them. The entire application is about selling a singular, coherent version of yourself, and the essays are where you do it.
My advice to anyone starting out: Keep a ‘Story Bank.’ Seriously. Keep a running document with short anecdotes and numbers—how many people, hours spent, a specific line of dialogue, a concrete outcome. That made the last 500 hours of writing much faster than the first 500.
